Social Organization Comparison

How would you teach a comparison of different societies? Now we start working with a combination of secondary sources and primary sources, materials from the time period. The two main components in a society’s organization are class (also called caste or rank) and gender. Most societies are organized by class in which the wealthy (or their descendants) have more control. Women have often been relegated to second place. Here are several examples from history and throughout the world.     Assignment directions 1. Read the sources below and select the ones which will let you compare two societies regarding class and two societies regarding gender. The two comparisons do not have to be of the same societies so you might actually compare three or four societies total in this assignment. The Laws of Manu covers both topics and so can be used for both questions. The journal article which compares gender for four societies can be used but you also need to compare those with a second society for gender so you aren’t just repeating what the journal article said.  2. Compare two societies on class. Identify key points to discuss. Some examples: whether you can marry across your class, whether punishments are different for different classes. 3. Compare two societies on gender. Identify key points to discuss. Some examples: who gives permission for marriage, whether there is divorce, inheritance rules, treatment for adultery, types of jobs for women.  4. Now, include the two comparisons in a paper. (About 1/2 the paper) 5. Next, figure out how you would teach this material to a class of students of whatever level. Consider what you would expect your students to know about life in these societies based on these sources and what kind of activities you would do ( lecture, class discussion, projects, etc.) (About 1/2 the paper) Use only the information from the three to four sources you chose (and the Lecture Notes if needed). I want your analysis, not something you found on the Internet on the subject.  Work alone.  2-3 pages, 12 point font, 1 inch margin all around, double-space. You don’t need a title page or Works Cited since you are only discussing the two sources which you will identify in the first paragraph or as soon as you start discussing them. Use proper American English spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and paragraphs.
