The Coronavirus Pandemic

In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared a pandemic due to infection from COVID-19, a coronavirus that originated in Wuhan, China, in 2019. Since the initial report from China, this infection has spread to every country, has infected more than 15 million people, and to date, has killed almost 700,000 people worldwide. In the United States, an explosion of cases has been reported by The Center for Disease Control (CDC) in a matter of weeks.  Currently, the United States (US) has more than 4 million cases and more than 145,000 people have died.  As a result, the US unemployment rate once skyrocketed to 14.5% and now, 30 million people became unemployed. Currently, there is no guarantee of a “return to normal” as we know it. The opening of schools is uncertain, and the healthcare system remains overwhelmed with an influx of hospitalizations, shortage of supplies and staff, and an increasing number of deaths reported daily. Nursing is a hands-on practice and requires the nurse to be wholly present with the patients, and nurses know that healthcare is always changing as it is not the profession today that it was 5, 10 or 20 years ago.
