Economic analysis report

Writing Assignment: Your perspective is that of a policy analyst with an international organization such as the World Bank who is preparing a brief study of a country with one key recommendation to increase growth. You may also take the perspective of a critic of government policy but the framework of your essay will be essentially the same. Your analysis should be fact-based and you should substantiate your arguments with concepts learned during our class throughout your report.  Students will be assigned a specific country by the third week of class. I will post a feedback survey to gather information on country preferences, but I will make the final assignment myself to assure a wide range of countries are covered.  While this two-page description of the assignment is a good summary, I will provide a more in-depth discussion of the expectations for this report during class. To do well on this assignment, you must pay close attention to that in-class discussion. We will devote an entire class to a workshop on this report once countries have been assigned and students have had an opportunity to gather data.  Outline:  Introduction and Overview (1-2 pages)  Table 1 Current output per worker (y) and growth rate since earliest year based on PWT data, and three other indicators of your choice compared to least one other country.  Situate your country in its region and/or world in a way that is relevant to economic development and the topics discussed in class. For example, if your country is in in Africa, you could use the Growth Report discussion of the special challenges of African countries.  Other indicators in Table 1 should reflect the general theme of your analysis. We will discuss many possible indicators, such as share of labor in agriculture, child mortality, average years of schooling.  Important Note: This introduction should not sound like a Wikipedia article but should be a focused analysis of features which influence economic development of your country and the data presented in the table. If you do refer to sources aside from course material, they should be referenced and included in the bibliography.  Steady-state and growth analysis (3-4 pages)  Present Table 2 Steady-state analysis and policy intervention (change in h, s, or I) based on production function in Chapter 7 and data on your country from PWT and graph of growth projections labelled as Figure 1.  Explain the concepts of steady-state analysis and their implications for future growth based on your chosen policy intervention by elaborating on Table 2 and Figure 1 in words. Do not present formal equations but discuss concepts in words to justify your chosen policy intervention.  Important Note: Very specific guidelines for the data and construction of both tables will be given in class. You must review these directions before you construct the tables.  Policy Intervention (3-4 pages)  Depending on your policy intervention, this section focuses on a particular aspect of your country’s economy and explores in greater depth your chosen policy intervention. A key part of this section is the presentation and analysis of data on your country to illuminate your policy intervention. For example, you may focus on one of following (as related to a change in the parameter in parenthesis) :  Macroeconomic policy (s) Human capital and/or equity (h)  Openness to global economy (s or I) Political and institutional quality (I)  Two graphs that present data should be numbered and referred to in the text. You must construct the graphs yourself from data obtained from many resources we will discuss in class.  Brief summary (1 page)  Highlight the main points of your report and your predictions for the future economic development of your country.  General Guidelines:  1. The page guidelines are approximate and include tables and graphs and text in 12-point font and double-spaced lines. Your paper should follow this outline and include the four topic headings. However, it is a good idea to creatively rename at least some of these headings to reflect your own focus.  2. You should include at least 4 citations to The Growth Report and Introduction to Economic Growth (IEG) as you explain features of your economy and justify your policy intervention. If your perspective is as a critic, you may include in your four citations the works we discussed in class by Acemoglu and Easterly. You should number these citations and you may use short-hand abbreviation as follows:  “Country X experienced high inflation on the order of 10 percent per year in the last decade, as shown in Figure 1. This macroeconomic instability is detrimental growth and countries perform best with inflation in the single digits (3. The Growth Report, page 53)…”  3. You do not need a bibliography unless you are citing sources other than the two course resources. In this case just include a list of sources at the end, and reference these sources by title and page within the text as in the example above.  4. The assignment must be posted to GauchoSpace as a pdf file by the due date noted on the course syllabus. A grading rubric will be posted separately that gives a detailed checklist of expectations for the assignment and corresponding points.
