Getting Better Writing
Over the past several weeks you’ve been asked to think deeply about the fantasy genre. You’ve done so within fictional contexts and you’re doing so currently, too, within your own fictional context that’s being rendered in the form of a game. As with all writing situations, you’ve got a lot of plates spinning at the moment. You’re managing the sentence-by-sentence construction of your worlds and rulesets; you’re thinking about conventions of genre; you’re trying to make the things you write make sense in their respective contexts, too. If you’re working on your game, the idea is that your writing should be in some sense “playable.” If you’re analyzing a story, then your analysis should be readable and should make sense. What are the two biggest difficulties you’ve faced so far, and what are your two biggest successes? When it comes to difficulties, just describe the two things that have cropped up more than once and which have proven to represent some area of your writing that you think needs more work. It’s fine if the area you discuss is related specifically to the material of the course, or if you’re dealing with some concern that’s slightly broader. Try to be as specific as possible. When you’re thinking about successes, try to think specifically of anything that you feel that you’re starting to get better atsome area of your writing where you’re detecting improvement. Describe that improvement, give a specific example, and try to explain why you feel it’s happening.
