Trail of Tears

Background: Elias Boudinot was a member of a prominent family of the Cherokee Nation.  In 1826, Boudinot delivered a speech to a white audience in the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. He was fundraising for a Cherokee national academy and printing equipment for the Cherokee Phoenix, the first Native American newspaper. John Ross became principal chief of the Cherokee nation in 1827.  As a child, he learned traditional Cherokee customs while also practicing European traditions and speaking English at home.  Ross led the protest against the Indian Removal Act passed by Congress and signed into law by President Andrew Jackson in 1830. Under terms of the act, the president had power to negotiate removal treaties with Indian tribes living east of the Mississippi.  When some tribes refused to relocate, President Jackson authorized the military to force their removal.  This forced removal came to be known as the “Trail of Tears.” Primary Source Documents to read for this assignment: PRIMARY SOURCE: Elias Boudinot “An Address to the Whites,” 1826 PRIMARY SOURCE: Chief Ross’ letter regarding the Treaty of New Echota (1836) In your essay, you should: Answer all parts of the questions. Use specific, cited, direct evidence from the article to support your answers and bring out insightful interpretations. Use correct spelling and grammar. Meet the word count minimum of +600 words total.  It is fine to exceed the word count. Format: Double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman is my preference, but you won’t lose points if you use a different font or single space.  Please be sure to include a word count. Sources:  History as a discipline uses Chicago style citations, but I am fine with any style you are most comfortable with (MLA, APA, etc.) For this assignment since I am familiar with the sources you’re using and you don’t need to find any outside sources, you don’t need to do a formal works cited.  Include quotes from the articles throughout your assignment, and use in-text parenthetical citations (Boudinot). See the grading rubric posted below and the sample posted under Module 0.   PROMPT: Describe some of the similarities between the two primary source documents in terms of content and the tactics used by Boudinot and Ross. Describe some of the differences between the two primary source documents.  Explain what factors (background of each author, audience, purpose, timing) might be the reasons these differences exist. Why do you think Boudinot and Ross believed the United States government was in fact an institution that would protect Cherokee rights? What does each man consider success and failure regarding the Cherokee people? Use direct evidence (details, examples, and quotes) from the documents to support your analysis throughout your essay.
