Initial Self-Assessment:1.Assess your strengths in areas such as clinical performance, priority setting, delegation, staff relationships, etc. 2.Examine areas of needed improvement. 3.Write your objectives for addressing areas of practice where you need improvement. 4.Create a plan to use your strengths to help you accomplish the above objectives.INCLUDE THIS IN MY PAPER:My strengths: I’ve only been in the OR so far but from previous clinical experience my strengths are communicating with my patients , being compassionate, making them feel comfortable, I am comfortable with head to toe assessments , documenting, I look up meds I do not know a lot about , explain to my patient why they are on meds, explain side effects , provide teaching Things I need improvement on: I would like to be more confident in pharmacology (familiarizing myself with most common drugs , what they do, how they work, side effects etc.) be more comfortable speaking to doctors and nurses and not being afraid or embarrassed to ask for clarifications etc objective plan : write about making note cards for drugs, work on my anxiety and fear to be able to communicate better etcHERE IS EXAMPLE OF MY FRIENDS PAPER StrengthsAlthough I have only been on the unit for one day I have been able to assess my strengths. I can communicate with patients in a compassionate way in which they feel comfortable with me being a part of there care. I am able to perform a thorough assessment on my patient determining some abnormalities. I felt comfortable speaking about my patient in the SBAR format. I also felt comfortable speaking with my preceptor and asking questions. I was able to verbalize proper medication administration technique while educating the patients about what they are being given. If I did not know the medication, I looked up the medication in the cerner system before entering the room with my preceptor. I also believe I take corrections from the nurse in a very constructive way. I do not let it upset me, rather I write down her suggestion and asked to speak through the skill so I can improve for next time.Improvement I believe I need improvement in pharmacology. Although I am able to recognize common medications such as beta blockers, the intensive care unit administers medications that I am not familiar with. I would like to become more knowledgeable in critical care medications by the end of this semester. I would also like to improve how I interact with the doctors and advanced practice nurses on the unit. I felt timid speaking with them and I did not communicate in the way I felt like I should have. I would like to gain confidence rather than fear I will say the wrong thing. I also believe I need improvement in time management and how to arrange the day. We only had 2 patients however I did feel scattered and would like to improve on that. Objectives and PlanIn regards to pharmacology I would like to set the goal for myself to learn two the three new critical care drugs weekly. I would like to know how they work, why they give it, potential side effects, and different interactions. I would like to make notecards for this. I believe this would also be a good study tool. I would like to improve my communication with doctors by practicing in my head what I will say in my head before actually saying it. Ensuring I know all the facts. I believe communication and time management are skills that also improve with time. For time management I would like to sit down before starting the day and make a check list of everything that has to get done with the times next to it such as medications and assessments. Seeing my day at a glance and being able to check things off is something that I feel may help me be less scattered during the day.
