Break into Song Poetry

Part of the pleasure of poetry is in its relationship to music. Many songs contain several elements of poetry such as rhythm and rhyme, imagery, and figurative language. For this assignment, you will select a song, annotate the lyrics, and compose an essay that discusses how the poetic elements contribute to the theme of the song. Select carefully as some songs are more poetic than others. If your favorite song isn’t rich enough in poetic devices, choose a different song. (Also, please keep your song choices PG13. I am too old and do not wish to be shocked into cardiac arrest. ) In your essay, you will need to Include textual evidence from the song lyrics that you feel support the identified theme. Your essay will need a thesis statement – you are not arguing to support your theme statement, but you are arguing how the use of specific poetic devices contribute to the theme you identified. To support your claims about the use of poetic devices, you will incorporate textual evidence that demonstrates how the use of various poetic devices support the meaning identified in your theme statement. Select evidence from the song that best supports the argument in your thesis statement. Ultimately, through the analysis of the song lyrics you and your reader will understand how they help contribute to the meaning of the song. Additionally, consider the speaker of the song/poem. Who seems to be speaking? Paraphrase the action of the song/poem. What do you think is going on?Then, look for and annotate the use of figurative language and poetic devices that you believe to be most important. Use the most important elements to support both your theme statement and thesis statement. What do these add to the piece? A good essay identifies the poetic elements. A GREAT essay identifies them and proposes a claim as to why they are there. You may fold lines of the song/poem into your paper to support a point. If you include more than one line, indicate the line break by inserting a diagonal slash (/). For example, Alliteration is used in the lines “Waits at the window, / wearing the face that she keeps / in the jar by the door” (lines 6-8).Notice also that you must indicate on what lines your quote occurred. Follow a quote with parentheses telling the reader the line numbers, for example, (lines 6 – 8). *Note that the end punctuation goes outside the closing parenthesis, not at the end of the quote.**These should be 3.5 – 4-page papers. With your essay, you will also be turning in an annotated copy of the song lyrics.
