You will be working with this registry for this week’s analysis problem:The Case of the Beleaguered Bicyclist: Monica, was riding her bicycle to work when she is involved in a collision with an automobile. She is taken to the hospital by ambulance where it is determined that her leg was broken in in several places. After surgery to insert pins and a night in the hospital Monica was released. Monica immediately begins trying to save money from her $40,000 a year salary to pay her deductible and co-pays. Since, at 27, she has only recently transferred off her parents’ policy and she is paying student loans, this is challenging. She hopes the hospital will be willing to set up a payment plan. About a month after her surgery she begins getting bills from the hospital not just for the amount of her deductible and co-pays but also for $30,000 of “uncovered” expenses. It seems that the hospital was out-of-network for Monica’s health insurance plan. Her insurance company will only reimburse at in-network rates. Monica tried negotiating with the hospital for a payment plan, but the hospital’s billing department refused to accept a payment plan that Monica felt she could afford. About two months after receiving the initial bill, Monica received a certified letter informing her that the hospital was bringing suit against her in state court to collect the unpaid balance of bill. What resources are available to Monica?Select a state other than Connecticut. If she lived in that state what options does Monica have to address the lawsuit against her? Resources you may want to investigate include consumer assistance agencies and health care advocates in either the private or public sector, availability of low or now cost legal services, and assistance for pro se ligtigants
