Sociology of Women and Gender Fall 2020 Final Exam Questions From Aijen Poo’s “Age of Dignity,” Kang’s Manicurist, David Emmanuel’s Purple Color Labor, Leah Lakshimi’s argument for Care Collective, to Kozue Akibayashi and Suzuyo Takazato’s Okinawa Women’s Struggle for anti-US military violence, the multiple meanings and practices of care have organized the second half of this course. First, we examined care in the domain of paid work and note the preponderance of working class, immigrant women in care work such as domestic work, surrogacy, and elderly care work. We also examined care as an ethic and a practice with which to dream and build a different world. In imagining otherwise, we read Eli Clare’s rather complex analysis of disability and objectification, Leah Lakshimi’s examples of Careweb, and Kozue Akibayashi and Suzuyo Takazato’s Okinawa Women Action Against Military Violence. While all of these discussions had multiple foci at various places, what these examples promote is Mia Mingus’ vision of “transformative justice” and disability justice groups’ collective care web as an alternative to state-sponsored provision and/or protection. Your final exam is based on our readings of care mentioned above. Select at least three readings in any combination to respond to the questions below. (provide your list of references). Present your answers in essay format. (1000-1200 words) Due date/time is December 16th 11:59 pm, 2020. Please submit your answer via Turnitin assignment. [no more than 25 % similarity report is desirable] (Your final is 25% of your total grade). (1) a. Pick one example of care labor that interests you. Describe the physical, emotional, and relational dimensions of care-work that this profession performs as paid labor. b. Based on the class readings, discuss the assumptions of care work and labor as naturalized feminine labor and its devaluation. c. Amongst all care laborers, domestic workers have led very impressive organizing in recent history. The National Alliance of Domestic Workers presents a great example of care workers’ victory. Identify their accomplishments and think about how these examples might influence other areas of care work. (2) Treating care as ethics and practice as provided in our class readings and discussion challenges the notion of individual self-sufficiency that is part of our capitalist mode of existence. Instead, the authors we read call for the collective attention to repair the breakages and pains brought to the communities of disabled and in Okinawa. Select either example in the community of disabled or in Okinawa. Discuss the following: a. Identify the problems and issues encountered by the community. b. Discuss the assumption of self-sufficient care and its limitations in addressing social problems. c. Provide an example of community efforts in care work as a way to challenge the existing idea of state protection and/or individual self-sufficiency.
