How do you feel about it?When first brought upon the team of my current job I received five days of full training shifts, where I was paired with another team member and they taught me the basics of the store. Within those five days I also had computer training corresponding with the day I was working (they had specific trainings to be completed with your first shift, second shift and so on). I felt as the onboarding training was quite overwhelming as there is a lot of tasks, and material to learn within the first couple of work days, and shifts were not really long enough to be able to completely understand completely. Luckily the way that Target does things is very helpful in the terms that you are always learning even after your training period. The term “team” is quite literal there, where if you don’t know how to do something there is someone that does that is willing to help you learn.2. How to ensure transfer of training?That is, how can organizations facilitate the application of skills acquired during training?For the way that Target does things during the training period I feel is a very good way to transfer the learning (depending on the trainer you are assigned for the day). Where you may have your trainer visually show you and explain to you what you are going to do, and then guiding you through it yourself, then with a bit of independence the trainee is able to be fully hands-on. Some tasks this is easier to do than others. However at the same time Target has Team Members doing computer trainings year round on various topics, for an example we just had to complete a COVID training. Other trainings can maintain to the department that you are in directly (for me being in style I get trainings on how to make the salesfloor look its best), however I can tell you straight out that the transfer of learning is not always present. I have had to do a spill cleaning training and I have yet to clean a spill, so the training never really stuck in my head.
