Psychology of Personal Understanding and Change – Counseling Project GuidelinesWe will have discussed many different models of psychology which have attempted to explain human actions, feelings and thinking, and how these modalities of our experiences may interact with underlying “biological foundation.” We will also discuss how these models have developed techniques to help others (and even ourselves!) change their behavior going forward in a positive direction. This assignment is aimed at facilitating your critical thinking about, as well as your personal application of, much of the information we will have discussed in class, and, also, what is presented in your textbook. You are expected to integrate and apply these two sources in this assignment.Using you knowledge of each of these models, describe, from each perspective (all 6 – includes the psychoanalytic, the behavioral, humanistic, cognitive, existential, and physiological/biological), how each model explains human behavior and motivation (Summation 1 – theory – below), how each has developed techniques of change based on their underlying theory (Summation 2 – technical application – below) and, last, how would each model explain you (and your current “functioning” and activity, and unique motivations), your development, as well as how they would see what you would need to do or change in order to “grow to your personal potential” (Summation 3 – personal application – below).More specifically, each of these six (6) theoretical perspectives will have 3 sub-sections in your project (18 subsection in total). And, in addition, you should provide a basic introduction to the effective characteristics of the helping relationship, as well as will integrate all of this content in a two page summary (in the form of a self-guidance or “treatment” plan) described below. Each of the 6 model’s subsections should consist of at least three (or more) substantive paragraphs, covering content and answering the following questions:Introduction: Describe the characteristics of the effective clinician/helper; Describe how the therapeutic relationship is established, and how it serves as a building block to help others change; Describe how varying models approach helping others change (in general);Summation one – should include a summary of the major concepts of each model using lecture (ZOOM) notes and other sources (including your text); This paragraph can also focus on the critical analysis of each model, including the comparing and contrasting of each model with other models (how do they explain you and other people differently? How does this model explain motivation? A person’s behavior? Are people determined by their past, and, if not, how do they overcome it? How do people become who they are and how do they change? The answers to these questions lead to how specific models develop strategies/techniques of change – which is covered below in Summation 2;Summation two – should focus on your extended application of this model to specific techniques/interventions and strategies of helping self and other people change; What specific techniques of change are used in each model to help bring about personal change, and how do they relate to the underlying theory of this model? It is expected that you have a detailed description of each technique, and demonstrate your understanding and command of the techniques purpose; You should cover at least 5 specific, unique clinical techniques in each model;Summation three – should focus on your personal application of this model to your life; How would this model assess and understand you? (use “scales” and other specific techniques discussed in class); How does this model describe your “healthy or optimal” functioning? What would this model “recommend” you do to reach your potential? Utilization and application of above-described techniques to yourself that help you personally understand or “apply” these strategies is also encouraged where it is suggested of how you might change or better understand your potential.Last, provide an integrative two (2) page summary that reflects your personal understanding of all of these models, and how they may, collectively, “explain you.” This summary can help you develop a “plan of action” for continued or improved quality of life and should also be discussed in this section. When would you be at your psychoanalytic, cognitive, behavioral, humanistic, biological and existential potential? What would you be like? How would you get there? What strategies and techniques might you specifically use to help with this growth?Grading of the project:The introduction section should be approximately 2 pages in length. Each sub-section/model of the counseling/self-project should be 3+ paragraphs (there should be a total of 18+sections/ paragraphs), and culminate in your two-page integrative summary. Each of the six sub-sections/models will be worth 15% of the project’s grade (90% total), and the introduction and two page integrative summary will be worth 10%. You will be graded based on your ability to convey how versed you are with each particular model and its principal concepts, but not on the depth of your self-revelation or other “personal” information (please only disclose content you are comfortable with). This assignment will be due at the end of week 14/15. Three (3) Sub-sections/models of the assignment will be reviewed and graded prior to this date, and they will be worth 20% each of your final grade (60% total toward final course grade). Due dates for these sub-sections will be specified in zoom, and revisions are expected to be incorporated on the final project submission. The final project’s overall grade will be worth 40% of your final class grade.
