Prep Work #7Purpose: For Entry 4, you’ll focus on a current conversation that is going on in your DC about an important topic. This prep work assignment is designed to help you:1. find sources to use in Entry 42. identifyexperts who are discussing the issue3. investigate how members of your DC use different genres to communicate about the issue and add to the conversation about the topic. Background: Annotated bibliographies are very common in academia and are really just a list a references (a bibliography) with a brief summary and commentary paragraph (thus, the word “annotated”.) For this assignment, you’ll be doing an abbreviated annotated bibliography that is focused on the purpose and content of Entry 4. If you’ve never done an annotated bibliography before, it might help to watch this very short video.Task: There are two parts of this assignment. See the instructions below to complete each part. Please submit this assignment as a separate Word or Google doc, not on this worksheet.Part 1: Write a short paragraph that tells me what trending or “hot” topic currently being discussed in your DC you plan to focus on in Entry 4. (This could be one you discussed in Prep Work #5 or a different one altogether.) Discuss why it is an important issue in the field and/or society in general right now and any debate or disagreements among members of the DC (i.e., Are there different views or opinions about the issue that members of the DC are debating?)Part 2: Below the paragraph in Part 1, include your annotated bibliography. For the annotated bibliography you need to do the following:1. Find three sources in which members of your DC discuss the topic you chose in Part 1.o These texts/sources must be three different genres.o At least two of your sources should be written by members of the DC (whom we can consider your experts since they know enough to be writing about the topic.)o One source may be written by a non-member (such as a journalist writing a newspaper article) but must include citations or quotations of at least one expert in the DC within the text.o In other words, you should find texts that illustrate what experts in your DC are saying about your chosen topic.o Find credible sources – use the library database or Google Scholar for things like a research paper or scholarly/journal article. While you can use a blog if it’s written by a credible source, you cannot use Tweets, Facebook posts or the like. These need to be full texts of more than a few sentences.2. Write a bibliographic citation of each source, following either APA or MLA guidelines. Put your citations in alphabetical order.3. Each citation should be followed by your annotation, which is one paragraph that includeso a brief summary of the main ideas of the text (no more than 2-3 sentences) written in your own words – no quotations from the texto a commentary/evaluation of the text that discusses things like the genre, the intended audience, the purpose, the author’s (or expert’s) background/expertise, any position the expert takes on the issue, how the source contributes to the conversation about your topic, etc.o Each annotation paragraph should be 175-250 words, not including the citation itself. You’ll want to be complete in your summaries/evaluations, but you’ll also need to be concise as that is an important characteristic of this genre.I’m including a couple authentic samples below so that you can see what annotated bibliographies can look like ‘in real life’, but keep in mind that their focus will be different from what you’re being asked to include in your annotations.Resources for Educators of English Language Learners – An Annotated BibliographyAnnotated Bibliography of Research for the State Board of Education OregonSpecifications:● Each source text must be a different genre (e.g., a research paper, a scholarly journal article, and a newspaper article). Be sure you know the difference between a scholarly (or academic) journal and a magazine, e-zine, blog, etc.● Each annotation must be one paragraph of 175-250 words total (excluding the citation/bibliographic information.)● The citations/bibliographic information must be ordered alphabetically and correctly formatted in either APA or MLA style.Grading: You will keep the point for this assignment if you fully complete the assignment and follow all instructions.
