Cultural Components of a Group

Part III. The I-Search Research processIn a first person (I) voice, write about your research process in a narrative form, sharing the step-by-step path you took to gather information about your chosen group. How did you conduct your research? First:• Research your group thoroughly using books, magazines, newspapers, films, encyclopedias, personal interviews, Internet (websites) sources, observations of group members, etc. to learn as much as you can. Include research on the group’s history in coming to America, its traditions, cultural components (i.e. foods, fashion, arts, etc.). Keep careful records of your research process–the dates of your research exploration, the resources you consult, the works cited information about your resources, etc.• Conduct at least one person to person interview with someone who belongs to this group (a family member or friend would be fine). Then:• In personal narrative form using the “I” voice, tell the story of your research processes, where you looked, when and what resources you found• In the narrative, mention all of the resources you examined during your search, whether or not you quoted, paraphrased, or summarized them in the final paper and whether or not they answered any of your questions• In the narrative, include all of the titles and authors of books and websites, podcasts, journal articles, names of persons you interviewed, films you watched, etc.**In the narrative, Give the titles and Works Cited information for the resources you reviewed and indicate how you found the information. (You will tell what information these resources contained in the next section IV.)• An Example:My Research ProcessWhen I started my research for this project in late April, the first thing I did was check the WVC Library Databases. I found a University of Nigeria journal titled, Ibo Life. The journal is produced quarterly and there were actually copies of it in the WVC Library. So I headed over to the library to have a look at some copies. At the library, I discovered that not only does the college have that journal, they also have a collection of books in the history section with titles such as, Traditional Ibo Clothing and Textiles, by Walter Van Mensah, that I checked out to review. It turned out that it was not about what I thought, and so it was not useful for me in the final writing. Another book that I found in that section of the WVC library did give me useful information, Ibo Art, by Adan Nkruma. After my WVC library search, I decided to see what I could find online a few days later. Using the information I gathered from the librarian during our class meeting with her, I used the Google advanced Search tool…And so on, discussing each step you took in the information gathering research process along the wayPart IV. What You Discovered—The conventional Essay structure (minimum 6 pages)Write an essay complete with an Introduction, a thesis statement, body evidence/supports for your thesis, and a conclusion, that grew out of your research.Use MLA format and citation, share your research results. What did you learn about your group in the resources you consulted? When did the group (or your family) first come to the USA? What significant challenges or issues did/does the group face coming to the US? Why? How were/are the issues or challenges addressed? How could they be addressed if they are still present? What is the group’s culture like—food, music, traditions, religion, languages, etc. How did the group’s culture habits impact the issues or challenges your research addressed? What do you think or feel about this group (or your family) now that you have learned more about this group?Part V. Analysis/Reflection (minimum 2 page)Assess your overall learning experience, and comment on the value of your discoveries and draw some conclusions. Some Questions to consider:• How accurate were your original assumptions?• Were your questions answered? How?• What surprised you?• What is the value of the information you learned?• What value did you derive from searching, discovering, and writing in the I-search format?• Was this I-Search approach helpful for you? Why/Why not?• If you had the project to do over, what would you do differently?Part VI. Works Cited PageFollowing the MLA documentation format for resources, list all of the sources you consulted in your research process, whether or not you quoted, paraphrased, or summarized them in . These should all be mentioned in Part III.
