Write a research essay (5-7 pages) on one of the following topics or on one topic of your choice. If you opt for the latter, please inform me of your choice. All essays have to be argumentative essays. Your thesis statement has to be relevant, particular and persuasive. Avoid all forms of generalization. All essays must contain a logically developed argument based on your thesis statement. Make sure you have a properly developed introductory and concluding paragraph, as well as sufficient paragraph divisions. Ideally, you should have at least one paragraph break per page. Please remember the general instructions for your research essay as given on your syllabus. I am copying them here: Your research essay should grow out of your previous assignments and provide a more comprehensive critical analysis of at least one novel and two theoretical texts. All essays must contain some independent research (documented in footnotes and your Works Cited). Your independent research must consist of a minimum of three additional bibliographical references relevant to your argument and your reading of the literary text. The exercise is designed to help you engage theory with literature in meaningful ways. Your essays must . . . include a Works Cited list and footnotes . . . Your essays will be graded on structure, grammar, spelling, logic of argument and presentation, and writing style. Your essay must be double-spaced, printed in Times New Roman 12, and adhere to the MLA documentation style. I do expect you to proofread your text and to quote properly in order to avoid any form of plagiarism.
