SEL competencies defined by CASEL, some states have developed a more specific set of standards describing what skills should be addressed at each grade level or age. You can access this list as well as active links to each state’s standards through the CASEL website. To locate this information go to the CASEL website, then click on the Policy tab at the top right corner of the page to see a drop-down menu and hover on State, to see a second drop down menu where you can select State Scan. From the State Scan page, you can select any state’s standards. Compare these standards to the competencies defined by CASEL. As you compose a compare/contrast essay, consider using headings to distinguish where you answer the following questions: Which state’s standards did you review and who (age/grade of students) are the standards intended for? How well do you think the state’s standards reflect CASEL’s SEL competencies? What are the similarities and/or differences? What do you see as the benefits or challenges to having a set of SEL standards? What opportunities for improvement do you see for the state you selected? Length: 3-5 pages, not including title and reference pages References: You must cite the state’s standards and any additional sources, although no other sources are required Your essay should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your essay should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
