Cost Effectiveness Evaluation

G.R.A.S.P. Goal: Your goal is to evaluate a reaction based on reaction efficiency and cost analysis and report your findings to your boss. Role: You are a chemical engineer at a company that makes chemicals for use by many other companies Audience: You need to tell your boss whether the reaction you are evaluating is worth it Situation: Analyze the chemical reactions involved in various industrial processes and chemical principal industries that use stoichiometry (e.g. production of fertilizer, fabrication of plastics, airbag deployment) and describe how industries apply principles of stoichiometry. You need to assess the efficiency of the reaction and determine the cost of the reaction per 1 kg of the product (e.g. fertilizers, plastics, airbag). In addition, you will need to evaluate if the cost is in line with the current going rate for a kilogram of the chemical. Product: You will need to prepare a short presentation for your boss that communicates your findings to either keep making your chemical as is, or research other ways to make it. You will also need to include a copy of all your data to justify your findings and arguments. Your work will be judged on the clarity and accuracy of your presentation and the quality and clarity of your accompanying data. Your boss should be able to easily determine if your chemical is worth making or not. Performance Task description for students: As a chemical engineer at a company that makes all sorts of industrial chemicals you have been asked by your boss to evaluate the cost effectiveness of the chemical reaction used to make one of those chemicals. Your job will be to choose a reaction and determine its efficiency and how much it costs to make 1 kg of the chemical in question (e.g. fertilizer, plastic, airbag). Then you will prepare a short presentation explaining your findings and making a recommendation to either keep making the chemical as currently done, or to explore other methods of making the chemical. Your work will be judged on the clarity and accuracy of your presentation and the clarity and quality of your accompanying data.
