For this week’s discussion topic, I would like you to watch the three videos and read the short article and presentation about neurotransmitters. Please share your thoughts and ideas with the rest of the class. A few questions to get you thinking: Are any of the concepts presented new to you? This week, I would also like to specifically focus on the neurological underpinnings of attitude and behavior. Basically, sometimes if you want to make changes with yourself, it is best to ACT. That is, don’t sit around and pontificate and wait for inspiration to make a change in your life. Many cognitive-behavioral therapies work on this principle. I am sure if I have some substance abuse studies students here in the mix that may be familiar with Alcoholics Anonymous, much of ‘the program’ is based on action to change thought. Recently, social psychologist Amy Cuddy wrote a book (Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges) on how something as simple as changing our Posture and Body Language can change not only other people’s perceptions of you but your own attitude and possibly even your body chemistry. I just read a book recently called “Meet Your Happy Chemicals: Dopamine, Endorphin, Oxytocin, Serotonin” by Loretta Graziano Breuning, Ph.D. It’s pretty interesting. The gist of her book is that you learn to alter your behavior and thought to rewire the brain’s neural connections so you build ‘new happy habits’. When I read the book, to me it made a case for the neurological underpinnings that make cognitive-behavioral therapies some of the most successful evidence-based approaches to treatment, counseling, or psychotherapy in clear easy to understand language for the non-neuroscientist. It also reminded me of the quote, “To make anything a habit, do it. To not make it a habit, do not do it. To unmake a habit, do something else in place of it.”–Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus.
