Planning the Conclusion The conclusion is the final portion of a speech. It is very important and is seldom longer than several sentences. The goals of an effective conclusion are to emphasize the key idea or ideas of the essay and to intensify the emotions, or feelings, of the audience. Don’t conclude your speech and then add to it. In the conclusion, you must restate your: Topic sentence, which is your overall stance or viewpoint on your issue. Thesis statement, which is a restatement of your three main points There is no specific order in which you must restate these sentences as long as you fit in smoothly with rest of your concluding thoughts Lastly, you must conclude your essay in a way that your readers will remember your argument. You can do this by incorporating a Summary – A short restatement of key information Recommendation – A short statement that tells the audience the specific behavior you want them to follow Call to action – Words that urge the reader, listener, or viewer to take an immediate action Stirring ending – One that helps you intensify the emotion or feeling that you want the audience to experience
